1887 1/2 Liberty Head Gold Quarter EaglePCGS graded MS63
The "Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933" by Garrett and Guth states, "The 1887 quarter eagle is scarce in all grades. This date becomes increasingly elusive in the higher states of preservation. The finest certified example is a single NGC MS-66, but nothing better than an MS-64 has appeared at auction over the last decade. Many of these scarce, circulation-strike Philadelphia Mint issues are under appreciated... Recent advances in auction records and population data have revealed the true rarity of many of these coins.
David Akers' Auction Analysis Volume II of 1975 also bears this out. He states, "This date is very underrated in choice uncirculated condition, and despite the considerably higher mintage, I have seen about the same number of uncirculated specimens at the 1887 as I have of the 1880, 1882, 1883, 1884, or 1886."
