    ,
U.S. COAST GUARDSMAN, SIGNALMAN FIRST CLASS, DOUGLAS ALBERT MUNRO.  AS PETTY OFFICER IN CHARGE OF A GROUP OF 24 HIGGINS BOATS, ENGAGED IN THE EVACUATION OF A BATTALION OF
    BELEAGUERED
U.S. MARINES TRAPPED BY A SUPERIOR NUMBER OF ENEMY JAPANESE FORCES AT POINT CRUZ, GUADALCANAL, ON 27 SEPTEMBER, 1942.
UNDER CONSTANT STRAFING BY ENEMY MACHINE-GUNS ON THE ISLAND, AND AT GREAT RISK OF LIFE, DARINGLY LED FIVE OF HIS SMALL CRAFT TOWARD THE SHORE. HE SIGNALED THE OTHER BOATS TO LAND, AND THEN IN ORDER TO DRAW THE ENEMY'S FIRE AND PROTECT THE HEAVILY LOADED BOATS, HE VALIANTLY PLACED HIS BOAT WITH IT'S TWO SMALL GUNS AS A SHIELD BETWEEN THE BEACHHEAD AND THE ENEMY.
WHEN THE EVACUATION WAS NEARLY COMPLETED, MUNRO WAS KILLED INSTANTLY BY ENEMY FIRE,
BUT HIS CREW, TWO OF WHOM WERE WOUNDED, CARRIED ON WITH THE EVACUATION OF
    APPROXIMATELY 500 MARINES.
MUNRO'S GALLANTRY AND DAUNTLESS DEVOTION TO DUTY UNDOUBTEDLY SAVED THE LIVES OF MANY WHO WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE PERISHED. HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS COMRADES AND HIS COUNTRY. FRONT CACHET PICTURES MUNRO, THE MEDAL OF HONOR, PURPLE HEART, ASIATIC-PACIFIC CAMPAIGN AND WWII VICTORY MEDALS, AND THE USCG INSIGNIA.  IN ADDITION, THE  1945 "COAST GUARD" COMMEMORATIVE' STAMP (replica) IS PICTURED.
THE COVER IS FRANKED WITH THE 2015 "U. S. COAST GUARD" STAMP
